Mexican Heather (False Heather, Elfin Herb)

Plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; Mexican heather is a fine-textured, dense-growing tropical perennial that produces a continuous profusion of tiny lavender, pink, or white flowers on compact mounds of tiny, shiny, narrow leaves — resembling true heather (Calluna) in growth habit and foliage texture but adapted to tropical heat rather than cool climates. It blooms almost without pause from planting through frost and is one of the best butterfly and skipper nectar plants available for Gulf Coast gardens. In zone 9 it is typically a short-lived perennial that often reseeds to maintain a permanent presence. It is outstanding as a low edging plant, in mass plantings, along pathways, or at the front of mixed borders where its fine texture contrasts beautifully with coarser tropical foliage.
