Mexican Flame Vine (Orange Glow Vine, Fireman's Cap)

Root cuttings in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun on a fence or trellis; Mexican flame vine is one of the most spectacular winter-blooming vines for zone 9–11, producing dense clusters of bright orange, daisy-like flowers with contrasting yellow or orange centers from October through March — exactly the cool-season period when most other tropical vines have stopped blooming. The loose, twining stems 6–15 feet long bear small, dark green, slightly succulent leaves and are covered in vibrant orange blooms that attract butterflies. The orange color is exceptionally vivid and warm, excellent for combining with blue salvias or purple queen for autumn and winter color. In zone 8a it is killed to the ground in hard freezes but established root systems resprout reliably each spring to bloom again by mid-summer.
