Marge Elderberry

Marge is a prolific European elderberry prized for heavy yields of dark berries used in syrups, jams, and wine. Plant in full sun in moist, fertile soil and keep it well watered, as elderberries are shallow-rooted and thirsty. Fruit set improves dramatically with a second, different elderberry variety planted nearby for cross-pollination. Prune out the oldest canes each late winter to keep the plant vigorous and productive. Always cook the berries before eating, since raw fruit and other plant parts can cause stomach upset.
