The climbing stems have glossy, dark green leaves that are attractive even out of bloom. Modern compact ('Sundaville' and 'Sun Parasol') series stay under 3 feet and are outstanding in large pots and hanging baskets. The larger vining types need a trellis or support and can reach 8–10 feet. Feed every 2 weeks with a bloom-booster fertilizer for maximum flower production. In zone 9–10 mandevilla may be left outdoors year-round in a sheltered location; in zone 8a bring inside at first frost and keep barely moist through winter. Very sap is milky white and mildly toxic — wear gloves when pruning.
