Turk's-cap

Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to deep shade; Turk's cap is one of the South's most versatile and valuable flowering shrubs, producing bright red nodding flowers with tightly spiraled petals that never fully open (resembling a Turkish fez) from summer through frost — and in zone 9–10, flowering nearly year round. It is outstanding in dry shade under large trees where little else will bloom, and is equally at home in full blazing sun. Ruby-throated and rufous hummingbirds are its primary pollinators and mob the flowers from summer through migration. In zone 8 it dies back to the roots in hard freezes but re-sprouts reliably in spring and reaches full size by July. Do not overwater; it tolerates considerable drought once established.
