Plant in acidic, moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; Canada mayflower is a delicate, miniature native groundcover of boreal and northern hardwood forests, spreading by slender rhizomes to form mats of glossy, 1-2 inch heart-shaped leaves just 4–6 inches above the forest floor. The tiny white flowers in May and June in fluffy clusters resemble lily of the valley; the pea-sized fruits turn speckled pale red in fall and are eaten by forest birds. It grows naturally across vast areas of North American boreal forests and performs best in cool, acidic, shaded conditions similar to those under conifers or at altitude. In northern woodland gardens it is an excellent carpet beneath ferns and native wildflowers. Not suited to hot-summer climates; best in zones 2–6.
