Magic Lily (Resurrection Lily, Surprise Lily)

Plant bulbs with the neck at or near the soil surface in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial shade to full sun — magic lily earns its name by following a seemingly magical seasonal cycle: broad, strap-like leaves emerge in early spring, grow through April, then disappear entirely by June, leaving no trace for two months. Then, in July or August, apparently bare ground suddenly produces clusters of tall, leafless stalks topped with large (3–4 inch), fragrant, pink to lavender-pink lily-like flowers in a spectacular summer surprise that inspired the common names 'surprise lily' and 'resurrection lily.' The flowers last 1–2 weeks. Interplant with hostas, daylilies, or groundcovers to hide the disappearing spring foliage. Clumps increase slowly and bloom more prolifically when undisturbed — divide only every 7–10 years when overcrowded. One of the most reliably carefree bulbs for the southern garden.
