Plant in strongly acidic (pH 4.0–5.0), moist to wet, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; fetterbush is a native evergreen shrub of pine flatwoods, pocosins, and bog margins across the coastal South, producing glossy, leathery, sharply ribbed leaves (the midrib runs parallel to the leaf margin — a key identification feature) and small pink to white urn-shaped flowers in early spring that are critically important for native mining bees and early bumblebee queens. The plant naturally grows in waterlogged, very acidic soil and is adapted to conditions that are difficult for most other plants. An outstanding native plant for bog gardens, wet acid borders, and naturally moist sandy soils in the Southeast. All parts are toxic to livestock and humans if ingested.
