Root cuttings easily in water and transplant to fertile, well-drained soil in partial shade; the plant sprawls attractively as a groundcover or can be trained onto a low trellis. Harvest leaves and shoot tips regularly; the raw leaves have a crunchy, mild, slightly succulent texture and are popular in Southeast Asian salads and as an anti-diabetic traditional food. Unlike the closely related Okinawa spinach, this species has smooth (not wavy-edged) leaves without the purple underside. Bring cuttings indoors before first frost for overwintering; in frost-free areas it grows year-round and can be lightly sheared to encourage fresh growth.
