American turk's-cap lily

Plant bulbs 4–6 inches deep in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in partial shade to light sun; Turk's cap lily is the tallest native eastern lily, and in optimal conditions can reach 8 feet with dozens of richly spotted orange reflexed (turkscap-shaped) flowers per stem in July–August. Unlike cultivated Asiatic or Oriental lilies, it grows naturally in wet meadows and forest edges and requires consistently moist soil throughout the growing season. It tolerates more shade than most lilies and is valuable in the lightly shaded, moist native garden border. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are primary pollinators.
