Canada lily

Plant bulbs 4–6 inches deep in fall in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial shade — Canada lily is one of the most graceful and spectacular of all eastern wildflowers, producing tall, whorled-leafed stems 3–5 feet high topped with pendant clusters of 3–16 large (3-inch), nodding, bell-shaped flowers in yellow to orange to deep red with dark spots inside, held on gracefully recurved pedicels in June–July. The flowers are visited by hummingbirds, swallowtail butterflies, and bumblebees. Canada lily grows naturally in moist meadows, wet prairies, stream banks, and open woodland edges throughout the northeastern and Appalachian US, in conditions that remain consistently moist through the growing season. It is more adaptable to partial shade than most lilies and blooms reliably in dappled light. Naturalize in moist, shaded meadow gardens and along stream banks for a stunning effect.
