Drooping Leucothoe (Dog Hobble)

Plant in consistently moist, deeply acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), humus-rich soil in partial to full shade; drooping leucothoe is a graceful native evergreen shrub of mountain stream banks and ravines in the Southern Appalachians, with long arching stems clothed in lustrous lance-shaped leaves that turn bronzy-burgundy-purple in winter — one of the finest winter foliage colors in the shade garden. Tiny white bell-shaped flowers in May are fragrant and nectar-rich for early bees. The plant spreads by stolons to form a layered, naturalistic colony that suppresses weeds effectively. The cultivar 'Rainbow' has cream-pink-green variegated foliage; 'Girard's Rainbow' and 'Zeblid' (Scarletta) are also widely available. All parts are toxic. Excellent massed under rhododendrons, azaleas, or as an understory layer beneath oaks.
