Опис
Laurel Greenbriar is an evergreen native vine of moist woods, swamp margins, and thickets of the coastal plain from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas, climbing by tendrils to 30 feet or more with stiff, spiny stems and long, narrow, leathery evergreen leaves that make it the greenest plant in the winter understory forest. The small, dark blue-black berries are produced in clusters and are a critical winter food for wild turkeys, black bears, white-tailed deer, mockingbirds, and cedar waxwings when other food sources are exhausted. The spiny, interlocking stems create impenetrable thickets that provide ideal nesting and escape cover for ground-nesting birds, rabbits, and other small wildlife, and the tubers were historically eaten by Native Americans. Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; Laurel Greenbriar tolerates periodic flooding and deep shade once established, and requires a sturdy structure or tree to climb.

Plant container-grown transplants in spring in moist, well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; provide a sturdy support or allow to scramble into a tree. Laurel Greenbriar is difficult to transplant from the wild due to its deep, tuberous root — use only container-grown nursery stock.
