Опис
Plant in well-drained, deeply acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), humus-rich soil in partial to light shade; mountain laurel is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania and one of the finest native flowering shrubs of the eastern woodlands, producing intricate, geometrically precise cup-and-saucer flowers in white, pink, bicolored, and banded forms in late spring. The flowers have a remarkable mechanism — the stamens are bent under tension and spring upright when touched by a bee, catapulting pollen onto the pollinator. All parts of the plant are toxic. It performs best in cool, moist, acidic woodland gardens and benefits from afternoon shade in zone 7–8. Named cultivars like 'Olympic Fire' (deep red buds, pink flowers), 'Elf' (compact dwarf), and 'Galaxy' (burgundy-red buds) offer exceptional garden forms. Mulch heavily with pine bark or oak leaves to maintain soil acidity and moisture.
