Japanese Millet

Broadcast at about 0.5-1 lb per 1,000 sq ft onto a moist seedbed and rake lightly to cover 0.25-0.5 inch deep. Japanese millet germinates fast in warm soil and tolerates temporarily wet or flooded ground better than most summer cover crops. It produces abundant biomass in as little as six to eight weeks and can be used to smother summer weeds in fallow beds. Terminate by mowing before seed set to avoid volunteers, then incorporate residue or leave as mulch. Frost will kill the crop, providing free termination ahead of fall or spring plantings.
