Опис
Japanese Fiber Banana is the hardiest banana in the world, native to the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan and widely grown worldwide for its ability to provide a lush, tropical effect even in cold climates where true tropical bananas cannot survive — the rhizome is reliably hardy to the ground in zone 5 with heavy mulching, producing new pseudostems up to 12–15 feet tall each growing season in warm, moist conditions. In zones 9–10 the pseudostem survives winter and can eventually produce small flower clusters, though the fruit is not culinary; the plant's value is entirely ornamental, providing dramatic tropical foliage and a bold vertical accent that transforms temperate gardens into apparent tropics for the summer season. Divide pups from the parent clump in spring and plant in the richest, most moisture-retentive soil available in full sun to partial shade; water generously throughout the growing season and fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer for maximum growth. In zones 5–7, cut the pseudostem to within 12 inches of the ground after frost and mulch the root zone with a foot or more of insulating material through winter.

Divide and plant pups (offsets) in spring after all frost danger has passed, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. In zones 5–8, mulch the rhizome heavily with 12–18 inches of straw or leaves in fall to protect from deep frost; the pseudostem dies to the ground but the rhizome re-sprouts vigorously each spring.
