Japanese Blood Grass (Red Baron)

Plant in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade; Japanese blood grass 'Red Baron' is one of the most visually striking ornamental grasses available, producing upright, narrow blades that emerge green at the base and deepen to an intense, blood-crimson red toward the tips — the color intensifying through summer and fall until the entire blade glows a brilliant red that appears almost translucent when backlit by the sun. It is outstanding as an accent plant among silver or chartreuse foliage, at the edge of water features, or in mixed containers. An important safety note: the cultivar 'Red Baron' (sold as Japanese blood grass) is the non-invasive selection that must be grown from vegetatively propagated red material only. Any all-green reverted shoots that appear must be removed and destroyed immediately, as the green form (cogongrass, Imperata cylindrica) is one of the world's most destructive invasive grasses, classified as a federal noxious weed in the US. Do not allow 'Red Baron' to produce flowers or seeds. Do not plant in warm climates (zone 9+) where conditions favor reversion.
