Plant in moist, average soil in full sun to partial shade; ironweed is a tall native perennial of moist meadows and streambanks producing intensely saturated royal-purple flower clusters in late summer and fall that are unmatched for pure color saturation in the late-season garden. The flowers are extraordinary butterfly magnets, particularly for monarchs, swallowtails, and skippers fueling up for fall migration. Ironweed is called 'iron' because the stems are so tough and fibrous that they were once used as tying material. To control height in garden settings, cut plants back by half in late June before flowering; this delays bloom slightly and reduces final height from 6–7 feet to 4–5 feet. Self-seeds moderately — deadhead after flowering if not needed.
