Blue flag

Plant rhizome divisions at the soil surface in moist to wet, slightly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; blue flag iris is the quintessential native wetland iris of the northeastern and central US and Canada, growing in marshes, bogs, wet meadows, and streambanks with bold violet-blue flowers veined with white and yellow in late spring. It is native across a vast range from Labrador to Virginia, making it more cold-hardy than the similar southern blue flag (I. virginica). The flowers provide nectar for specialist long-tongued native bees and bumblebees. Plant at the margin of a water garden, in a rain garden, or in any consistently moist location. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. The rhizomes spread slowly to form handsome colonies; divide every 4–5 years in fall to maintain vigor.
