Interrupted Fern

Plant in moist to wet, acidic, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade; interrupted fern is one of the most distinctive and easily recognized native ferns of eastern North America, named for its unique habit of placing spore-bearing fertile pinnae in the middle section of certain fronds — interrupting the green sterile pinnae above and below with brown fertile segments that drop early in the season, leaving characteristic gaps in the frond's silhouette. This genus (Osmunda) produces the fibrous 'osmunda fiber' root mass prized for centuries as a potting medium for orchids and epiphytes. Interrupted fern grows in moist, shaded conditions similar to cinnamon and royal ferns but tolerates slightly drier slopes within the moist woodland. The large vase-shaped crown makes a bold structural statement in the wet shade garden and the graceful fronds provide excellent textural contrast with broad-leaved hostas and astilbes.
