Plant in moist, slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; smooth hydrangea is the native parent of the enormously popular cultivars 'Annabelle' and 'Incrediball', which have transformed shade gardens with their enormous round white flower heads up to 12 inches across. Unlike oakleaf hydrangea, smooth hydrangea blooms on new wood — cut all stems to 12–18 inches in late winter for the strongest, most floriferous performance. It grows naturally along stream banks, woodland edges, and cliff faces across the eastern US and tolerates more shade and competition than most shrubs. If flower heads become too heavy for stems, cut back less severely the following year. Pollinators of many species use the tiny fertile flowers at the center of the flower heads.
