Red Yucca (Hesperaloe, Coral Yucca)

Plant in very well-drained, lean soil in full sun; despite its common name 'red yucca,' hesperaloe is not a true yucca but a close relative in the Asparagaceae family native to south Texas and northeastern Mexico. It forms striking rosettes of long, narrow, grass-like leaves with thread-like fibers along the margins and produces tall, arching flower stalks 4–6 feet high covered in coral-red tubular flowers from spring through fall — an outstanding hummingbird plant that blooms continuously for months. It is extraordinarily drought tolerant, heat tolerant, deer resistant, and adaptable, thriving in pure gravel or caliche where most plants fail. The yellow form ('Yellow') is an attractive alternative. One of the best xeriscape plants for the Gulf South, equally at home in formal landscapes and naturalistic plantings.
