Plant in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade; butterfly ginger is among the most intensely fragrant of all flowering plants — the pure white, butterfly-shaped flowers in summer and fall fill the garden with a heady sweet fragrance that carries 20–30 feet in still evening air. It is the national flower of Cuba and is widely grown throughout the tropics for its extraordinary perfume, used to scent garlands and leis. The tall, handsome reed-like stems 4–6 feet tall with broad, lance-shaped leaves make it an imposing accent or screening plant in shaded areas. In zone 8–9 the foliage dies back in winter but the roots resprout reliably from established rhizomes. Note that this species is listed as invasive in Florida, Hawaii, and the Pacific islands — plant responsibly, do not plant near waterways or natural areas, and contain the rhizomes if needed.
