Hardy Begonia

Hardy begonia is the most cold-tolerant of all begonias, thriving in full to partial shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil where few other flowering perennials will bloom dependably — it is especially valuable for deep shade gardens in the South. Drooping clusters of soft pink (occasionally white) flowers appear from midsummer through frost on arching, succulent stems with distinctive asymmetrical leaves, providing months of color. Plants produce tiny bulbils in leaf axils that drop to the ground and naturalize freely, gradually forming a lush colony without becoming invasive. In zones 7 and warmer, the tuberous roots survive mild winters underground; top-dress with 2–3 inches of compost each spring to maintain vigor.
