Kentucky Coffeetree is one of the most architecturally dramatic of the eastern native trees, native to the bottomlands, river terraces, and moist upland woods of the central and mid-south United States from New York and Nebraska south to Tennessee and Oklahoma, immediately recognizable in winter by its massive, stout, few-branched silhouette, deeply ridged gray bark, and enormous, persistent, dark brown seed pods up to 10 inches long that hang through winter — one of the most bold and graphic of all bare winter tree forms. The enormous, doubly-pinnate leaves (up to 3 feet long and 2 feet wide) unfurl very late in spring and drop early in fall, giving it one of the shortest leafy seasons of any native tree; in late spring it produces hanging clusters of fragrant white flowers attractive to long-tongued native bees. The hard seeds were roasted and used as a coffee substitute by early settlers and Native American tribes (raw seeds contain toxic alkaloids destroyed by roasting); the pods were fed to pigs and cattle historically. Extremely drought-tolerant, pollution-tolerant, and adaptable to urban conditions once established; an outstanding underused native street and shade tree.

Scarify seeds by nicking the hard seed coat or soaking in hot water (not boiling) for 24 hours before planting. Plant nursery transplants in spring in well-drained to moist, slightly alkaline to slightly acidic, deep soil in full sun. Caution: seeds and pods are toxic if ingested raw; roasting destroys the toxic alkaloids.
