Опис
Gulf cordgrass (formerly Spartina spartinae) is a dominant warm-season perennial grass of Gulf Coast salt flats, tidal margins, and alkaline coastal prairies from Texas to Florida, forming dense monocultures that bridge the ecological transition zone between tidal salt marsh and upland prairie. Its stiff, round, sharply pointed leaf blades make it distinctive and somewhat prickly to handle, but the plant is invaluable for stabilizing saline, alkaline, or brackish coastal soils where few other plants establish — it has exceptional salt tolerance that exceeds most native coastal grasses. Historically, gulf cordgrass prairies were important feeding and nesting habitat for Attwater's prairie chickens and migratory shorebirds; coastal prairie bird species including horned larks, savannah sparrows, and sedge wrens use the dense stands for winter foraging. In Gulf Coast coastal restoration projects and living shoreline designs, gulf cordgrass is planted in the transition zone between smooth cordgrass tidal marsh and upland black needle rush or salt flat communities, where it reliably establishes and spreads via rhizomes.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Plant divisions in spring in full sun in saline, alkaline, or brackish wet to seasonally flooded soils along Gulf Coast bay margins, salt flats, and transition zones; gulf cordgrass tolerates both salt and alkaline conditions that would kill most grasses.
