Plant in well-drained, sandy, lean soil in full sun to partial shade; Gulf Coast muhly is one of the most spectacular native grasses of the southeastern coastal plain, producing dense tufts of fine, arching leaves topped with extraordinary clouds of pink-purple to reddish plumes in October–November — the fall bloom is breathtaking in mass plantings, creating a haze of color resembling smoke drifting over the landscape at sunset. It is the native counterpart to the widely planted inland pink muhly (M. capillaris) but is even better adapted to the sandy, humid Gulf Coast environment and more salt-tolerant. The fine-textured foliage is attractive throughout the growing season. Shear to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. An outstanding fall-blooming native for the Gulf Coast landscape.
