Plant in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained to moderately moist soil in full sun to partial shade — grumichama is a beautiful small-to-medium Brazilian Eugenia producing glossy, deep burgundy-to-black cherries (3/4 inch) with sweet, soft, slightly acidic flesh and 1–3 seeds, eaten fresh, made into preserves, or used in beverages. The trees are ornamental year-round with attractive smooth, pinkish-brown peeling bark, handsome dark glossy leaves, and masses of white flowers before fruiting. Unlike many tropical fruits it tolerates partial shade and moist conditions and has some cold hardiness to about 28°F. The fruits are produced in late spring and are consumed enthusiastically by birds. Closely related to jaboticaba and surinam cherry, the grumichama is one of the finest but least known of the Brazilian Eugenia fruits, producing a fruit that resembles a cherry in size and sweetness.
