Golden Spider Lily (Yellow Lycoris)

Plant bulbs with the neck at or near the soil surface in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in partial shade to full sun — golden spider lily is the warm-climate companion to the red spider lily (Lycoris radiata), adapted to zone 7–10 and particularly well-suited to the summer heat and humidity of the Gulf Coast, where it thrives with neglect and summer drought. Like its red relative, the dramatic golden-yellow spider lily flowers appear on bare stems in late summer and early fall — naked, leafless scapes 18–24 inches tall topped with spidery clusters of reflexed petals and long, arching stamens — well before the strap-like leaves emerge in fall and persist through winter. The brilliant golden-yellow color is uniquely striking among Lycoris species and combines beautifully in the fall garden with red spider lilies, hurricane lilies, and copper rain lilies.
