Golden Shower Tree (Indian Laburnum, Cassia)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in full sun; golden shower tree is one of the most spectacular of all tropical flowering trees — the national tree of Thailand — producing cascading chains of brilliant golden-yellow flowers 12–18 inches long that completely cover the tree before the new leaves emerge in spring, creating a breathtaking golden cascade. It grows fast (3–5 feet per year) in frost-free conditions, reaching 25–40 feet, and tolerates drought, alkaline soil, and seaside conditions once established. The flowers are edible in some cultures (flower buds in curries). In zone 9a it may die back in severe freezes but typically regrows from established root systems; site in a protected location sheltered from north winds.
