Siebold's Hosta (Gold Hosta)

Plant in moist, slightly acidic to neutral, humus-rich, well-drained to moderately moist soil in partial to full shade — Siebold's hosta is one of the most majestic and widely grown of all hosta species, producing enormous, boldly corrugated, glaucous blue-green to blue-gray leaves up to 18 inches long that give the shade garden a dramatic, tropical-foliage effect. The sluggish pale lavender flowers on low, barely-visible scapes in early summer are secondary to the spectacular foliage. Famous cultivars derived from this species include 'Elegans' (intensely blue, deeply corrugated), 'Frances Williams' (blue with gold-green margins), and 'Big Daddy' (deeply puckered, intensely blue). The waxy, powder-coated leaf surface repels water and resists slug damage somewhat better than thin-leaved hostas. While this species is at its finest in cool-climate zone 4–7 gardens, it grows adequately in zone 8 in deep shade with consistent moisture and limited afternoon sun exposure.
