Опис
Plant in well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral, sandy to loamy, deep soil in full sun to partial shade; American licorice is the native North American relative of the commercial licorice plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra), native to the Great Plains and western prairies where it grows along stream banks, roadsides, and moist prairie edges. The thick, deep roots have a genuine licorice flavor from glycyrrhizin compounds (the same compound as commercial licorice) and were used extensively by Native American nations as a food and medicine — chewed fresh, dried as candy, brewed as tea, and used to treat sore throats, toothaches, and stomach complaints. The pinnate compound leaves and small white to pale violet flowers are attractive; the bur-like bristly seed pods cling to fur and clothing. A nitrogen-fixing prairie legume, it improves soil fertility. Spreads by rhizome; contain in smaller gardens.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Plant root divisions or container plants in spring in well-drained, slightly alkaline to neutral, sandy to loamy, deep soil in full sun to partial shade; American licorice spreads by deep, extensive root systems and can be difficult to remove once established — site it where expansion is acceptable.
