Dancing Ladies Ginger (Mauve Dancing Girl)

Plant in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil in partial to full shade; dancing ladies ginger is one of the most delightful and enchanting of all the ornamental gingers, producing pendant clusters of small mauve-purple flowers with reflexed wings and a long, curved, yellow lip that resembles tiny ballerinas or dancing ladies when the breeze sets them in motion. The nodding flower clusters 2–4 inches long appear on arching stems from summer through fall. It is one of the most shade-tolerant of all the ornamental gingers and is an excellent candidate for bringing color to shaded tropical gardens from summer through fall. In zone 8–9 it often produces small bulbils (little bulb-like structures) in the leaf axils that can be separated and planted to propagate new plants.
