Опис
Sow seed in fall in moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial shade to full sun; giant ironweed is one of the most dramatic native wildflowers for the back of a large border or naturalized area, growing 5–10 feet tall with flat-topped clusters of intense royal purple flowers in late summer and fall that are irresistible to monarchs, painted ladies, giant swallowtails, and dozens of native bee species. The vivid purple color is one of the most saturated of any native wildflower. It grows naturally along stream banks, moist woodland edges, and roadside ditches throughout the eastern US and is one of the most reliable and showy native plants for late-season pollinator value. The tall stems and architectural seed heads provide winter interest and bird food. It spreads by rhizome in moist soil and should be given space or divided annually to control spread in the border.

Surface sow seed in fall in moist to average, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial shade to full sun; seeds require cold stratification so fall sowing or winter sowing is preferred. Giant ironweed naturalizes readily in moist soils and can be aggressive — allow 4–6 feet of space.
