Plant in moist, very acidic (pH 4.0–5.0), humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; galax is one of the premier evergreen groundcovers for deep shade in acidic woodland gardens. The round, glossy, leathery leaves form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet that turns brilliant bronze-wine-red through fall and winter before returning to rich green in spring — providing bold, year-round color in the shade garden. The small white flowers on tall wands in late spring are attractive to bees. It grows naturally on the rocky, acidic woodland slopes of the Southern Appalachians, where it is sometimes called 'coltsfoot.' Galax leaves are highly prized in the floral industry and are heavily wild-harvested — purchase only nursery-propagated plants. Spreads slowly but persistently by rhizome to form colonies.
