Fringed Bleeding Heart (Eastern Bleeding Heart)

Plant in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; fringed bleeding heart is the native eastern species with deeply cut, ferny blue-green foliage and pendant rosy-pink heart-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring through fall — an exceptionally long season for a shade perennial, unlike the common garden bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) which dies back completely after spring bloom. It is native to rocky woodland slopes in the Appalachians from New York to Georgia. The foliage may die back partially in summer heat but rebounds with fall cooling. It spreads slowly by self-seeding to naturalize a shaded bed and is an outstanding companion for hostas, ferns, and native wildflowers. All parts are toxic if ingested.
