Опис
Florida Yew is an extremely rare and critically endangered native conifer restricted to fewer than two dozen sites in the moist, shaded ravines along the Apalachicola River in the Florida Panhandle, where it shares habitat with Florida Torreya in one of the most species-rich temperate forest communities in the southeastern United States. The small evergreen tree or large shrub produces fleshy, bright red arils surrounding a single hard seed in fall; the aril is the only non-toxic portion of the plant, as all other parts including the seeds, bark, and needles contain highly toxic taxine alkaloids that can be rapidly fatal to humans and livestock. Related to the yews exploited in the development of Taxol, a significant cancer chemotherapy drug, Florida Yew has declined catastrophically from unknown causes and numbers fewer than 250 remaining individuals in the wild. Plant conservation-sourced transplants in cool, moist, well-drained, acidic, humus-rich soil in deep shade — this species is intolerant of direct sun, drought, heat, or compacted soils and demands the microclimate of a deeply shaded, cool ravine.

Час посадки: 0–4 тижнів spring
Plant conservation-sourced nursery transplants in spring in cool, moist, well-drained, rich, acidic soil in deep shade on a north- or east-facing slope. All parts except the red aril are extremely toxic — do not plant where children or livestock have access. Seeds require an extended warm-then-cold stratification of 12–18 months before germination.
