Florida Azalea (Yellow Azalea)

Plant in moist, acidic (pH 4.5–5.5), humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade; Florida azalea is one of the earliest and most fragrant of the native deciduous azaleas, producing clusters of brilliant golden-yellow to orange-yellow tubular flowers with exserted stamens in early spring before or with the emerging leaves. The fragrance is intensely sweet and carries far in the still spring air. It is native to the wooded ravines and stream banks of the Florida Panhandle, south Georgia, and Alabama and is one of the best native azaleas for Gulf Coast zone 8–9 gardens, tolerating the heat and humidity better than northern species. Plant as a foundation shrub, in a native garden, or massed along a woodland edge. Prune only immediately after bloom if needed; never shear. The color is exceptionally vivid when purchased in bloom.
