Florida Anise Tree (Purple Anise)

Plant in moist, acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; Florida anise tree is one of the finest native evergreen shrubs for deep shade in the Deep South, producing lustrous dark green aromatic foliage (strongly anise-scented when crushed) that forms a dense, refined screen under mature trees. The unusual maroon-red star-shaped flowers in spring are striking at close range though small. It grows naturally in moist, shaded ravine heads and stream banks in the Florida Panhandle and adjacent states. An excellent substitute for the invasive Japanese anise tree. All parts of the plant are toxic; it is not related to culinary anise despite the scent. Performs best with consistent moisture and mulch to keep roots cool.
