Flatwoods Plum (Hog Plum, Sloe Plum)

Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic, sandy to loamy, dry to moderately moist soil in full sun to partial shade — flatwoods plum is a spectacular native small tree of the southeastern coastal plain and Gulf Coast pine flatwoods, producing masses of pure white five-petaled flowers on bare branches in February–March, among the earliest and most profuse of all native spring-blooming trees and a critical early nectar source for native bees before other flowers open. The small round fruits (3/4 inch) ripen in July to purple-black with a blue bloom; they are tart to sweet depending on the tree, used for preserves, jellies, wine, and as wildlife food for deer, foxes, and dozens of bird species. An excellent candidate for wildlife food plots and naturalistic plantings in the pine flatwoods region. Many individual trees have superior fruit; select superior-fruiting trees to propagate for orchard use. Drought tolerant once established in adapted sandy soils.
