Plant in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; firespike is one of the most valuable shade plants for Gulf Coast gardens, producing tall, dramatic spikes of brilliant scarlet-red tubular flowers from late summer through frost — at exactly the time when ruby-throated hummingbirds are fueling up for migration, making it one of the premier hummingbird plants of the Southeast. Unlike most flowering plants, firespike performs best in bright shade to partial shade and actually blooms more reliably away from direct afternoon sun in the heat of zone 9. The large, glossy, deep-green leaves provide bold tropical texture throughout the season. Cut back by half in early spring to encourage dense branching and more flower spikes; in zone 8 it may die back to the ground in hard freezes but regrows from the roots reliably.
