Virginia False Aloe

Virginia False Aloe is a native succulent wildflower of the southeastern United States, producing a compact basal rosette of fleshy, strap-like, often maroon-spotted leaves from sandy or rocky, well-drained soils in prairies, cedar glades, open woodlands, and roadsides from Virginia south to Florida and west to Nebraska. Unlike the dangerous spiny agaves to which it is closely related, False Aloe has soft, non-rigid leaf tips, making it entirely safe to handle; after several years of vegetative growth, it sends up a single spectacular flower spike reaching 4–6 feet tall, bearing fragrant, tubular, greenish-brown to purple flowers that open at night and attract sphinx moths as their primary pollinators. Once the flower stalk sets seed, the rosette dies but is replaced by offsets from the base, allowing clumps to expand gradually over many years without becoming invasive. Plant in extremely well-drained, sandy or gravelly, infertile, rocky soil in full sun; False Aloe is highly drought-tolerant and long-lived in appropriate conditions but quickly rots in wet, poorly drained, or heavily amended soils.
