White Stopper is a native evergreen shrub or small tree, native to the coastal hammocks, tropical hardwood forests, and pineland edges of south Florida, the Florida Keys, and the Caribbean, known for its spicy, clove-like or cinnamon fragrance that can be detected from several feet away — the aromatic foliage distinguishes this species from most other Florida stoppers. It grows to small tree size in protected hammock situations or can be maintained as a dense, evergreen hedge through pruning. White Stopper tolerates partial shade and is one of the most salt-spray-tolerant of the native Eugenia species, making it a versatile choice for coastal gardens in zones 9b–11 that need a fragrant, wildlife-supporting evergreen screen.
