Plant small corms 2–3 inches deep in moist, humus-rich soil beneath deciduous trees; yellow trout lily is among the most charming spring ephemerals of the eastern forest floor. The single mottled brown-and-green leaf (resembling a brook trout's back) appears in early spring, followed by a solitary nodding yellow lily flower on plants old enough to bloom. Young plants form non-blooming single-leaf colonies for 4–7 years before maturity. Plants go completely dormant by early June, leaving no trace; mark their location to avoid disturbance. The fleshy corms are edible and were eaten by Indigenous peoples, though harvesting from wild populations is unethical. Ideal naturalized en masse under deciduous trees to create a spectacular spring carpet.
