Опис
White trout lily is a native spring ephemeral wildflower of moist deciduous woodlands across the central and eastern United States — its pair of mottled, silvery-green, trout-patterned leaves emerge in early spring and last only until the canopy closes overhead, disappearing completely by June as the plant retreats underground for the rest of the year. The nodding, six-petaled white flowers (with blue or violet anthers) open in April above the characteristic mottled foliage, pollinated primarily by native mining bees and bumblebee queens seeking early-season pollen; the flowers are followed by capsule fruits dispersed by ants (myrmecochory) along with an elaiosome food body the ants consume. White trout lily spreads slowly by underground stolons to form large, showy colonies in undisturbed woodland soil — in ideal conditions, a single planting will gradually expand into drifts of hundreds of plants over decades. Purchase bulbs from native plant nurseries; wild collection is destructive as colonies take 4–7 years to produce the first flower from seed and may not recover from disturbance.

Plant dry corms 2–3 inches deep in fall in moist, rich, humus-rich, well-drained woodland soil in partial to full shade; white trout lily forms colonies slowly by offsets — plant in drifts of 10+ for impact, as single plants are easily lost in the woodland garden.
