Epimedium (Barrenwort, Bishop's Hat)

Plant in well-drained to dry, slightly acidic to neutral soil in partial to deep shade; epimedium is among the most valuable groundcovers for difficult dry shade — one of the few plants that genuinely thrives in the dry, root-filled zone under mature maples, beeches, and other large shade trees where almost nothing else survives. The heart-shaped, often evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves are attractive year-round, turn bronze in winter, and the small but intricate crimson and pink bicolored flowers in early spring are delightful at close range before most shade perennials emerge. It spreads slowly but persistently by rhizome to form a dense, tidy, weed-suppressing mat. Shear back old foliage in late winter before new growth and flowers emerge. The genus contains dozens of outstanding species and cultivars; E. × rubrum is one of the most widely available and adaptable.
