Опис
Dog fennel is a ubiquitous native perennial of roadsides, old fields, and disturbed open areas throughout the Southeast, instantly recognizable by its thread-fine, feathery, intensely aromatic foliage — the camphor-like scent has historically made it a natural insect repellent, and bundles were placed in farm buildings and bedding to repel fleas and lice. Despite its weedy reputation in some circles, dog fennel is an ecologically important native: the clouds of tiny white flowers produced on 3–6 foot wiry stems in late fall are among the final nectar sources of the season for migrating monarchs and late-flying native bees in the Gulf Coast region, often blooming well into November in zone 9. The fine-textured, billowing foliage provides striking textural contrast in the naturalistic garden and is used by some designers as a feathery filler among coarser-leaved perennials. Cut back to a few inches in late winter; it regrows rapidly from the base and will reach full height by midsummer even in the Gulf South's hot climate.

Plant by direct seed or division in spring in any sunny, well-drained soil; dog fennel is a robust, fast-growing perennial throughout the Gulf Coast and effectively self-seeds to return annually even where it is treated as an annual in colder zones — cut back hard in winter.
