Plant the small, yellow, corn-kernel-like tubers 1–2 inches deep in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in full to partial shade; squirrel corn is a spring ephemeral closely related to Dutchman's breeches (D. cucullaria) but with rounded, heart-shaped flowers instead of pantaloon-shaped ones, and it has a hyacinth-like fragrance that D. cucullaria lacks. The finely dissected gray-green foliage and delicate white flowers appear in March–April then disappear completely by early June. The plant produces its namesake yellow tubers rather than the white grain-like tubers of its close relative. Entirely toxic — do not confuse with any edible plant.
