Japanese holly fern

Plant in moist to moderately dry, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in partial to full shade — holly fern is the most drought-tolerant and heat-tolerant of the widely grown shade ferns and one of the finest ferns for Gulf Coast gardens. The bold, lustrous, dark green fronds with glossy, sickle-shaped (falcate) pinnae have an unmistakably bold, coarse texture reminiscent of holly leaves — giving the fern its common name. It is essentially evergreen through zone 6–11, maintaining handsome fronds year-round even through light freezes. Unlike most ferns it tolerates dry spells between watering and grows in relatively dry soil conditions once established. Excellent for shade planting under trees where soil competition and drought would stress more delicate ferns. An outstanding and low-maintenance fern for southern shade gardens in zones 6–11.
