Plant in moist to wet, strongly acidic, humus-rich soil in partial shade to full sun; swamp cyrilla (also called titi or leatherwood) is a distinctive multi-season native shrub of coastal plain bogs, swamp margins, and pocosins in the Southeast, producing long racemes of small white flowers in June and July that are intensely fragrant and among the most important summer nectar sources for native bees and the basis of the highly prized 'titi honey' produced by southeastern beekeepers. The semi-evergreen leaves turn brilliant orange-red in fall before dropping, and in warm winters may persist through spring. The plant is adapted to very acidic, poorly drained soils where it has little competition. An outstanding specimen for bog gardens, rain gardens, and acid pond margins in zone 7–9.
